What is K-install?

K-install was originally developed internally in K-solutions to automate the task of deploying our Lotus Notes based Knowledge Management suite in large organizations as an alternative to products such as InstallPump. Using this application reduced the time to deploy our software from hours to minutes. We have continued to develop this product and would know like to make it available to the wider Lotus Notes community in order to get feedback and ideas of how to develop it further.

Main Features

K-install allows you to build custom installation programs using an easy-to-use XML based scripting language.

Common Tasks:

• K-install is easily configured to perform many  tasks associated with installing and setting up a Lotus Notes database to work within an organizations existing system set-up.
• Examples include Copying/Creating new databases, Modifying ACLs, Signing databases, Creating new documents or Modifying server documents.

User Input

• Built-in user input controls aid in entering common data with active lists.

• Server list to specify a server name from those in users name & address book.

• File location browser.

• Server IP/DNS lookup from name & address book.

Simple User Interface

• K-install's user interface consists of one simple window from which databases to install are selected from a list. The install script determines which input boxes are shown to gather information (e.g. server name) from the user.

• Progress/log window auto expands to show a running progress of install.

• Icons used in the progress/log window help to identify the current operation

Error Handling/Reporting

• K-install has built in error checking allowing most common errors to be trapped and the error source rectified before continuing.

• Progress log can be saved for reference or in the case of an error to aid debugging.

• The log can be saved to standard text file or to preserve the icons as an html file.
